European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
