RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
